Johann and Gertrude started their family in Buschmühle, Germany, where Gertrude had grown up. They had at least two German-born children: Johann Arnold (1819) and Peter * (1836). With such a gap in between, there were likely other children that I am not aware of.
They migrated to the US between 1836 and 1839, settling in Marshfield (presently Mt. Calvary), Fond du Lac County, WI. They had at least one American-born child, Gertrude (1839).
Lost graves?
I have not been able to find death or burial records for Johann or Gertrude. Neither one is listed on FindAGrave. Based on time and place, their likeliest church / burial ground would be St. Isidore / Holy Cross Cemetery. Lori L. at St. Isidore told me that she does not have Johann Q. or Gertrude’s names on record, but that their son J. Arnold is there. Here is Arnold’s FindAGrave profile.
The Milwaukee Archdiocese keeps older archived death records for Catholics in Fond du Lac County. I submitted a records request in May 2025. Researcher Amy Lisinski told me that she did not find Johann or Gertrude either. She said that there was a gap in the records from 1864 to 1876, which spanned the time when Johann probably died.
Without records, there is probably no other way to locate their graves than to walk St. Isidore Cemetery and hope to get lucky!
